PharmacistMay 24, 2024 at 8:45 pm in reply to: Need help formulating a clear gel face cleanserI think the problem here is Glyceryl Oleate and Hemp Seed Oil. They make your cleanser is an emulsion. You could try to eliminate them out of your formulation. To thicken facial cleanser, besides gums, you could try PEG-based thickener like PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate and PEG-150 Pentaery… (sorry I don’t remember the INCI name).

PharmacistMay 3, 2024 at 10:07 pm in reply to: Vitamin C + Alpha Arbutin Serum - Stability IssueIn my opinion, you should use gelling agents like xanthan gum or sodium hyaluronate. You can also consider using Alpha Tocopherol 1% plus Ferulic Acid 0.5% to increase stability of Vitamin C derivative. I have never used the combination of EAA and Alpha Arbutin before, so I am not sure about the interaction between this 2 materials.

PharmacistApril 26, 2023 at 10:27 pm in reply to: How to slow down or prevent tranexamic acid color change (yellow/brown)?The pH does not play much of a role because at the usual pH of cosmetic products of 5-6, the amino group of tranexamic has been protonated almost completely, making it more difficult to participate in the redox reaction.

PharmacistApril 26, 2023 at 10:23 pm in reply to: How to slow down or prevent tranexamic acid color change (yellow/brown)?In terms of formulation, I suggest using EDTA to chelate with heavy metal ions and inorganic sulfite salts for anti-oxidation. You should not use phenolic compounds for preservation because tranexamic acid will be oxidized faster (phenolic compounds are oxidized to quinone, quinone will damage tranexamic acid by Schiff base reaction). I did an experiment with my own comparison of preservative agents, using HPLC for quantification of tranexamic acid, and got the that results. Sealed vial caps and refrigerated storage also limit oxidation of tranexamic acid. My last word is, you cannot completely prevent the color change of tranexamic acid serum.

PharmacistJune 5, 2024 at 9:06 pm in reply to: Need help formulating a clear gel face cleanserIf you don’t want the skin being dry after cleansing, a little bit quaternium is enough I think. And about the pH, you could check again COA/SDS/TDS of all surfactants you are using. Each surfactant has a optimum pH range. If pH is too low, they could be hydrolyzed and affect transparency of your product.
Some material has high level of fatty acid and thay could react with metal ion in water, esspecially at low pH. Some chelating agents like EDTA, or biodegradable agents like EDDS and phytate might be necessary.

PharmacistApril 27, 2023 at 10:43 pm in reply to: How to slow down or prevent tranexamic acid color change (yellow/brown)?Yepp, thank you for your reply. Actually, the mechanism I propose is because I deduced from my university chemistry knowledge, it may not be correct, but surely tranexamic acid is incompatible with phenolic preservatives, because I have experimented.
