Thanks Belassi…Does it require any additional emulsifier for stability?
Saponification values are mostly provided for NaOH and KOH. How would you calculate for CaOH?

Also, would the final formula create foam as usual saponification formulas as well? How would you avoid that?

    Thanks Perry,

I just never thought of Carbomer being a culprit as I have used it with different surfactant and havent felt the same.

Is there a reason why HEC would be less heavy than Carbomer? Just curious.

    @David and Bob,

I am using a N Sodium Silicate Clear which I believe is a 40% Soln.

Apart from that, its just a Gel base thickenend with Veegum Ultra and Sodium Hyaluronate.

I might try Dimethicone as a non-volatile liquid..

    Hello Mentors!

I am just re-posting to make this thread alive!

I wanted to know if anyone has any experience working with Sodium Silicate Solution. If yes, I wanted to know if there is a specific process to keep in mind or specific ingredients to reduce white film?

    Looking forward to learn!

    Thanks

Thanks Bob for the clarification….From what I understand is I create a Saponification using Oleic Acid and NaOH and then add Decyl Glucoside?  Kindly correct if I am understanding wrong here.

@ Nasrin, I am aware of it…what we trying to learn here is how to thicken a Cleanser using Decyl Glucoside as a surfactact.

    Thanks

What have work best in your experience for Thickening Decyl Glucosides as well as providing Clarity?

Priya, you might need to share more information on other ingredients in the formula..for eg. what kind of Oils and what kind of thickener you are using. You can either use some ceteareth-20 or steareth-20 or make changes in oil ratio. You can even use 1000cst dimethicone  or use a faster absorbing oil

Great to see this thread getting so many information shared overnight;)

In my experience…I have seen that when I dissolve PVA in water and heat upto 80C, its hard to determine when to stop mixing…Again, I am more concerned when the formula moves to production.
So I did try to Pre-disperse PVA in Alcohol and that help using less energy and more clarity…….My only concern now is that PVA was not completely solubilized in Alcohol…Any comments?

Milliachemist, what grade might have better solubility and better peeling? Any idea?

Thanks Bob for great explanation. .yes, adjusting by multiple testing is exactly what I was trying to avoid. But sounds like its a common practice, especially with dispersions.

Bob, for eg. If we use 15.5% ZnO in a formula using a dispersion which has a range of 40-45% Active. How would you determine a range for future multiple production batches? When there is no consistency within the active content in dispersion itself?

    Thanks

    Great!

Was that your sole emulsifier? What % of Silsoft do you recommend?

In my opinion, you might not even need Xanthan or ultrez-30.
Just take water and glycerin, add EDTA.
Slowly sprinkle Pemulen-Tr-2 with mixing. Add surfactant and sunflower oil.
Then neutralize the batch with NaOH until gel formation.
Might need to back titrate with citric acid if you need pH 4.

    Hope this helps

  • Solvents like Capryl/Caprylic triglyceride, Alkyl Benzoate etc are non- greasy and used often to create stable dispersions…hope this helps in your formulation

  • @Zlink, you can use also 1-2% of Ecogel or Lecigel for stabilization and emulsification.
But in my opinion, you might still need some better high polarity solubilizing oils to keep the ZnO suspended.

    Thanks Perry.
Actually, even in glass container, I saw a reaction Which is beyond my understanding.
A TCA solution, dispersed in water, reacted badly with polysorbate(Presolubilized with retinol +fragrance) giving it a dirty green color sediment.
This solution also had some SD Alcohol in it..Any guess what’s causing such sediments?
