You might need a secondary anionic surfactant (glutamate /sulfosuccinate / taurate) to get the performance you need. If you have a look at Colonial Chemical’s website they always seem to use a second surfactant with the Suga Nate 160NC.

    https://colonialchem.com/products/suganate-160nc/

    Hope this helps 😊

The amount of surfactants is sufficient, but unless the grease is particularly heavy, I tend to use less Cetearyl Glucoside. The amount of glycerin is also not enough. The amount of PE9010 seems a bit high; even a concentration of 0.5% on my sensitive skin causes a stinging sensation. Additionally, it seems like no soothing ingredients have been added, which would be very necessary for children.

Remove Áloe, Glycerin and Panthenol (or add at very low levels, like 0.01%), since they are very water soluble and will be rinsed off without having done much. I wouldn’t use essential oils in a product for Kids due to their risk for sensitization. You could add some cationic polymer (like PQ-10) for better combing.

    Distilled Water qs Good

Sodium Laurylglucosides Hydroxypropylsulfonate 19 Have not used

Cocamidopropyl Betaine / CAPB 6 Can cause sensitives especailly for cradle cap

Decyl Glucoside 2.5 I believe this is good

Aloe Water 1 Aloe is my favorite

Glycerine USP 99.7 Percent 1 Another favorite ingredient

Phenoxyethanol and Ethylhexylglycerin 1 One of the better preservatives although the P can cause sensitivities sometims

DL Panthenol Pro Vitamin B5 0.5 Babies do not need this generally, oat would be better

ND Lavender Liquid Extract Base 0.5 Do not use it is dangerous. For scent there is no real safe level for babies. If you analyze the COA of whatever scent you enjoy, plug it into AI and see if any allergens are in it and test rigorously.

Lavender 40/42 Essential Oil 0.2 Do not use possible long term danger once eczema is “activated” it becomes a potential lifetime issue.

Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate 0.1 I’ve never used

I don’t know if you are wanting to thicken the product or to have a foaming spray type product but like all sulfate free products I feel this one will be a struggle to thicken.

It has the flexibility of being a foamer. I was waiting to create a test batch to see the consistency before thickening. You don’t think any of the gums will work?

Gums are tricky to keep it all together. If you are going that route I would incorporate some Sclerotium gum (so expensive though) along with some other gums, you can see what combinations you can access. There is always Carbomer/Xanthan combination if you are happy to use carbomer. Or one of the PEGs which I have never had much luck with.

For preservation. /Assume you’re using pe 1090 type source for phenoxy/EHG (9/1). It’s ok in a rinse off context but not great - isothiazolinones or a FA releaser would be much better. Suppose you’re not considering EDTA for policy reasons.

Suggest you have too much - cut it to 0.6%. I’d also add 0.26% Benzoate.

Thank you for responding Phil. I notice many of the major brands only have EDTA and some sodium benzoate as their preservatives. How is that possible? I know they have sterile labs but what about it sitting on shelves and for home use. Their pH is also usually 5-6 which confuses me even more.

I like EDTA of EGTA as it has a higher affinity for Mg and I’ve used it for a long time.

I know benzoate seems pretty weak at that pH BUT in combination with surfactants the effective pKa goes up so it works. Some folks (esp. Unilever) find it be enough, I don’t. But please recall preservation is not for shelf life - it’s for consumer contamination.
