shampoo not thickening
Posted by ssdc on February 23, 2018 at 6:38 amwater- (to 100%) Polyquaternium-10 (0.2%), EDTA (0.1%), SLS (19%), Decyl glucoside (2%), Sodium lauryl sarcosinate (2%), Tween 20 (1%), Acrylate Beheneth-25 Methacrylate copolymer (0.8%), dimethicone (0.5%), Betaine (6%), DMDMH (0.35), citric acid (0.2%), sodium chloride (0.2%), perfume
Above is my shampoo formulation.
After adding salt the shampoo don’t seems to be thicken. Any idea why?
Do PEG-150 disterate helps a lot in thickening?

Have you tried adding more salt? 0.5%, 0.75%, 1%
PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate or PEG-150 disterate will increase the viscosity. Try adding 1-2% of PEG 150 distearate.
What is the viscosity you are looking for? -
I did add more salt but the viscosity remains the same. Currently my shampoo is like water, I would like something more viscous than water
-
Try to change SLS with SLES and observe the viscosity.
-
I found that SLS causes my copolymer to be runny, not thicken
-
remove the copolymer and replace with 5—8% Carbopol SF-1

Did you try to increase the copolymer as certain ones are associative, 0.8% is just too low to observe any thickening. Or you can follow any of the above suggestions.
-
when I add the copolymer to anionic surfactant I get white precipitate. anybody encounter this as well.
-
Many times pH is the first thing to try before adjusting viscosity with other things
-
a pH of 8 is too high for a shampoo. Not more than 7. Preferably 5.5 to 6

Please let me know how to increase the viscosity of car shampoo particularly how to use the xanthan gum, that is the weight ratio of xanthan gum to oil in adding to the mixture. Thanks.
