  • Rheology Modifiers- Carbopol ultrez 20

I have been struggling to get these polymers to work in my formulas. Very touchy and a very fine line between too much and not enough.

Formulating new hair styling products, tried different carbomers and Carbopol ultrez 20 as rheology modifiers at .03-.1%
I have used TEA and Sodium Hydroxide to neutralize. I can never get the ratios right. Seems like it always gels my formulas too much making it useless as a rheology modifier I am hoping to use it for.
I am just needing it to slightly gel the formula to give slip and firm the formula just enough without making jello.

Any suggestions on how to weigh, neutralize and disperse these without making these mistakes?

I think your issue is the kind of carbomer you are using. There are low, medium and high viscosity. If you want to slightly gel your formula a high viscosity carbopol won’t work, no matter how much you use or how you neutralize it the result will be a thick gel.

I suggest you contact your suppliers and see what they have to offer for low/mid viscosity.

    Here you have a reference.

You should try a different thickener, eg Glucamate VLT. It is of course a lot more expensive, but has great long-flow whereas carbomers are generally short-flow.

    Thank you, Das and Belassi.
I will look into some of those as you have suggested. Truly appreciate the advice.
Certainly not all Acrylates C10-30 are created equal.
