  • Presence of IPA in Strong Cetrimide Solution 40%

    Greetings to all.

Today’s query is related to the pharmaceutical active ingredient Strong Cetrimide Solution 40%. Some manufacturers have Strong Cetrimide Solution 40% containing around 5-10%  volume IPA as well. Is it objectionable to use this solution which has an inherent IPA, in formulating products like Cetrimide 15% w/v + Chlorhexidine Gluconate 1.5% w/v intended for skin antisepsis ???

Not at all objectionable. Just do the dilution algebra and q.s. with IPA and water to avoid ppt. and you should be OK. IPA certainly will aid the antiseptic cause too, right?

The possibility of objection exists due to the application of the product formulated using this strong cetrimide solution. Cetrimide 15% + Chlorhexidine Gluconate 1.5% is applied to burns and wounds to disinfect. A colleague of mine had an opinion that anything applied to skin burns and wounds should be free of IPA but dettol antiseptic liquid contains IPA and is used to clean wounds and burns.
