  • pH for a Tinting Hair Mask, Shampoo, Conditioner Trio

I am at the beginning stages of playing with some personal-use formulating. I’ve successfully used plain coffee rinses on my hair before to tint it slightly darker. Now that I’ve gotten into formulating, I am curious for other’s opinions on pH of a “system” that’d start with a super-concentrated tinting hair mask that’d sit on for an hour, followed by a tinting shampoo and tinting conditioner. The normal “water” part of each formula will be a concentrated coffee. I’ll balance the pH to my desired level for each. My questions are:

    1. Is a tint from coffee like chemical dyes in that it will penetrate more with an open cuticle? If so, one or two of this trio should be a higher pH, yes? Maybe 6 or 7

    2. If yes to 1, then would you recommend either A. mask pH 6-7, shampoo pH 6-7, conditioner pH 4, or B. mask pH 6-7, shampoo pH 4, conditioner pH 4, or C. something else and why?

My goal is maximum coffee tinting without damage, and the acid at the end to seal and add shine.

Thank you so much in advance!
