Particle Size Reduction Recommendations
Hello All,Hoping to get some advice for a powder based formula I am working on. I have done some cosmetic formulation in the past, but have not done too much work with powder-only formulas, so if anyone has some tips or experiences they can share it would be greatly appreciated. For the formula, small particle size is going to be extremely important, so I am looking to acquire some new equipment.- Based on my initial research, I am thinking a jet mill would be the right tool for the job. I’d ideally like to start with a lab or pilot scale model, processing in the 1 kg/hr range, and easy setup and cleanability are definitely important to me. Looks like there are a number of manufacturers that make equipment in this size range (Hosokowa, Glen Mills, Fluid Energy). Does anyone have any makes/models they would recommend, and/or bad experience or companies to stay away from?
- I already have a small V-blender sized for 1kg on hand. I am more curious on order of operations for particle size reduction of a whole batch. The idea is that I will have an overall base formula, and then select additives based on the formula variant. Is it better to blend the powder together first, and pass it all through the micronizer? Or do most micronize the individual ingredients first then blend?
Thank you in advance for any and all advice!
