Organic Shampoo
Posted by Pious on May 26, 2019 at 7:33 pmHello everyone, i have formulated shampoo using 3 non ionic surfactants, natural extracts like ginseng etc.. & natural conditoners like aloevera gel etc..
1. What should i add for natural pink colour in it? Tried hibiscus extract but it eventually became brown from pink. Can i add beet juice? Or anything else
2. I feel slightly itchiness in the scalp for 2 days after shampooing. Would it be bcs of lamesoft po 65?Microformulation replied 5 years, 4 months ago 5 Members · 15 Replies -

To get good advice you’ll need to list all of your ingredients.
Also, are you creating this product for sale or for your own use? It is important to know this because using Hibiscus Extract and beet juice to color your product is ILLEGAL in cosmetics. If you want pink stick to approved FD&C colorants. If it is not on this list, it is illegal.
https://www.fda.gov/cosmetics/cosmetic-ingredient-names/color-additives-permitted-use-cosmeticsWithout knowing your ingredients it is impossible to tell you what causes the itchiness. But most likely it is not the lamesoft but probably one of your surfactants or natural extracts.

Thanks brother. Ok, i have checked the link of approved colourants.
My ingredients are
Plantapon sf
Olivem 400
Capryl glucoside
Lamesoft po 65
Cocomidopropyl betaine
With natural extracts like ginseng and aloeveraI have tried xanthan gum for thickening but i didn’t like the gooie texture so tried HEC but oil and watet phase gets separated so now gonna try Carbapol Aqua sf 1 but don’t know how to add and what percentsge to add in 100 ml of shampoo, also will my shampoo consider to be natural after adding this polymer and would it harm the scalp or any harmful ingredient in carbapol?
Pls help. It’s for selling brother. -
For oil phase i am adding olive oil 5 gms, biotin drops, essential oils and 1 fragrance oil.
-
So many issues here I do not know where to start.
OK here’s one: olive oil -> dandruff. BAD idea. -
Secondly you have a glucoside in there. In my *opinion* Lamesoft PO65 may facilitate irritation caused by the glucoside.
-
This formula would not be considered “Organic” according to any of Organic Certification groups. It may be considered “natural” but as this term has no real legal definition it is open to interpretation by your marketing department. You will need to do a knockout experiment to work out what is causing the irritation. My guess would be to start with removing the extracts.
-
Now the irritation is not there. Ok i will take out the glucoside and Olive oil. I actually added it for the lather. I am not finding a non ionic thickner in my country, India. I have read some of the data sheet of Glucamate vlt as suggested by brother Belassi and tried to find it in my country but couldn’t get it sadly. Now i am struck in the middle. All my investments and my efforts should not go in vain as my friends and others are in love with my other products and eagerly waiting for my shampoo now! Even me and my family are in need of it. Pls help!!!

Btw Thanks for such wonderful members here who come forward to help others. I really love this site and a Big “Thanks” for the one who made it.

I also want to know whether natural vegetable extracts like tomato/carrot change their colours from their original in neutral ph(6)? I searched and searched, read documents and did some experiments too but couldn’t conclude.
-
Don’t use natural extracts for colour. First, they radically increase the preservative requirement. Second, they are not stable!
-
Yes i tried colouring with alkanet but it changed gradually to dark dirty purplish black. So i had an idea of colouring with such acidic extracts like tomotoes which can resist and hold their colour in low ph of 6 . may be am wrong?

Ozgirl , how about claiming 98 % organic? Bcs i don’t want to add such non ionic /naturally derrived ingredients which may cause toxic issues for e.g. Glucamate vlt was suggested , i may get it but i read somewhere that PEG products are harmful in long run. I am really confused and struck in the middle just because of the thickner.
So may be i could combine xanthan gum with carbapol sf1 and check the consistency and viscousity? I read some formula which has these both. Any idea, anyone? Actually i am new to this cosmetic making.my knowledge is only experience based and is very limited. It has almost been 6 months since, i am researching in this shampoo. -
@Pious None of the surfactants you have listed above (eg. Plantapon SF) are considered “organic” so you would not be able to make any claims regarding the product being organic. They are at best considered naturally derived. It would be best to check your local regulations about what natural claims are acceptable in your country.
