Hi! Need help with my formulation. To tell you, im not a chemist, no background at all. I have learned these thing just by researching :) i have been doing trial and errors and this is the formulation i have come up with however im not able to achieve the viscosity i wish to or desired. Please see my formulation for 1liter:

    100g SLES
    50g Salt
    10g CDEA - coconut diethanolomide
5g LABS - linear alkaline benzene sulfonic acid
    1g NP-10 or tergitol
    10g VEGO liquid
    1liter H2O
    2ml scent

Is there a chemical i need to add aside from above to increase viscosity? I have tried to increase the amount of salt however it became watery. Or should i increase Sles? Btw, the scent im using is oil based which makes it cloudy as well. What type of scents should i use? Alcohol based?

I would appreciate your help everyone, thanks in advance :)

    1. You need to work in percentages. You have 1,176g not 1000g.

    2. Every ingredient should be measured in grams.
    3. There isn’t enough surfactant
    4. Research what the SALT CURVE means - you have too much salt.

    Try SLES at 30%

I forgot to address the cloudiness issue. This means the surfactant is not able to form a clear emulsion. If you are using an essential oil, I had better tell you straight away that some essential oils cannot be used in a clear formula, they will always cloud. Lavender for instance.

And please neutralize the LABSA using KOH or NaOH solution, then you go as per the instructions of Bob & Belassi. Still if you have trouble I would suggest using a betaine here, optimize.

Ahh i see. Thank you @Belassi @Chemist77 @Bobzchemist. I’ll have my testing on tuesday. I will apply all of your help. I hope by this week i’ll have my formulation perfect, thank you for the help :)

Ninol CAA from Stepan is really nice for viscosity building. You don’t need much, you could work it in with your SLES and just simply work on the ratio. Like mentioned above drop the salt level

Ameelyah… You need to increase the surfactant level atleast to 30% in order to keep it perform then need for the addition of salt will decrease thus less cloudy will be the solution.

As I look at how the ingredient quantities were stated, I want to ask, did you obtain SLES as a solid? I don’t know of any commercial sources of it that come that way, but only as approx. 30% in water or 60-70% in water-alcohol. Obviously saying “100g” means nothing if it comes only as solutions.

    What does SLES 30% mean?
    Thanks!

Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate @ 30% concentration.
