  • Help substituting BTMS - Needs to be Sulfate and palm free

    Hi All,

Looking to formulate a non palm based and sulfate free conditioner bar. I am having some difficulty finding a substitute to BTMS. I need a conditioning agent that is:
    Solid   at room temperature
    Sulfate free
    Non palm based
safe when in concentrations of 30%-40%

I have found one option, Emulsence (innospec) however this runs at about $120 aud/kg which is just far too expensive.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cetrimonium chloride about 4-5% on an active basis
with 2-3% cetearyl alcohol can make a nice BTMS like conditioner.

I don’t believe there is a palm free cetearyl alcohol readily available on the market, unfortunately, only in combination, the best I have found is mass balanced. Emulsense is definitely your best option, try the HC version - lower active, lower cost.

Incroquat BTAC (Cetearyl Alcohol (and)Behentrimonium Chloride) is sulfate free but not palm free.

Unfortunately when you want ingredients that meet certain criteria you will probably need to pay more.
