Handwash preperation
Posted by Chirag on February 6, 2016 at 5:03 amHi All, I have formulated hand-wash with almond oil and coconut oil. Formulation is as follows:-
Water 95. 41.6%
Sles. 100. 43.8%
Capb. 20 gm. 8%
Gly. 6 gm. 2.6%
Mp pp. 1 gm. .4%
Almond 2 gm. .8%
Coco 2 gm. .8%
Coc dea. 2 gm. .8%
Nacl. 1%
Perfume. TraceHere MP is Methyl paraben
PP is Propyl parabenIn this formulation i have encountered a problem that is the final product became cloudy. Another one is I dont have idea about is there any need to heat-up any ingredient or mixture of ingredients during the processs ? Any sugggestions would be welcomed

1. I don’t see any pH adjustment in there, and as I recall cocamide DEA is very basic. Have you measured the pH of the mixture?
2. Adding 1.6% oil to a surfactant mixture will probably result in a cloudy solution. The oils are being emulsified, not solubilised, and that’s what you see. If you want to add refattening, then there are quite a few products that will do that, and give a clear solution. For instance, Lamesoft PO-65, but I don’t recommend that because of its glucoside content, it caused allergies to several of my customers. -
Thank u so much sir for your suggestions. I forgot to take final ph. Actually, i use cocamide DEA in order to reduce the amount of CAPB used to increase the viscosity of the final product.
My question is what should be the maximum % quanyity of oils in the handwash formulation ? I will measure ph and then will come to you.
Thanx again -
Well, first of all, you had better know that cocamide DEA is not nowadays a very popular item with consumers. If you have a high purity source then OK, but it may damage your marketing. Just saying.
Secondly, CDEA merely moves the salt curve to the left. That is why you could use less CAPB. But you could equally well remove the CDEA and adjust the viscosity by adding salt.Adding any oil will impact the foam. Do you have access to soluble oils? That would be a better choice. Some will say, you can solubilise the oil with polysorbate, and you can, but again, it will impact the foam. -
Short answer? Don’t put any oil in handwash.
If you absolutely have to, 0.01 percent is the maximum I’d allow personally. -
Belassi, sir CDEA definately moves thesalt curve to the left but i have put it in as it has been said to increase the foaming of surfctant. If i m incorrect then please guide me.
Thank you all -
What you say is correct but CDEA is rather more expensive than SLES and you can simply add a little more SLES instead if foam is not as much as is required.
However.I note that you have a high % of SLES in there, your total surfactant mix is 52% !! I make a body wash here, and we are at 30% total surfactant, and it produces loads of foam. I would suggest making some tests to vary the proportions of SLES versus the CAPB. Try to get to say, 35% surfactant to begin. EG30/527/825/1023/1221/14Adjust each one using NaCl to the same thickness and do a foam test. You should be able to fairly quickly establish what works best. This is a fairly simple test to do and it’s something I tend to do whenever I am testing a possible new surfactant. -
@ belassi after completing formulation, my ph was at 6. Does ph have anything to do with Solubility of Oils ?
Second issue is as Bobschemist said to use oils at .01%, this quantity is very very low. Will it have any substantial effect on the output. As i am preparing 200 gm batch, how would i calculate .01 % of the total. -
pH does not affect this kind of solubility issue.
Ask yourself what you want the oil for. If you want it for refattening, then use a water soluble oil instead, or a product designed for the purpose such as glyceryl oleate (0.5%) or Silsense water-dispersible silicone (0.1%)0.01% of 100 grams is 0.01 grams. -
Greeting All, and sorry for replying late sir
My intention to use oils in the formualtion was to provide skin an added moisturising effect. As @ Bobzhemist suggest the usage level of oils at .01% , it requires some advance instruments to measure the suggested quantity if betch size is small.
If we dont put in oils at all and want to replace it with other conditioning ingredients, would U please suggest me any option..
2 ) what should be the optimum Ph of my Handwah ? Now it is @6.
Thanks all for your invaluable guidance. -

I already did. -
Hello everyone,
I prepared a liquid soap based on
SLES (9%),
CAPB (4%),
Glycerin (2%),
Ecosense (1%),
Cocamide DEA (1%),
NaCl, Fragrance, Citric Acid (for PH~6).
Why my liquid soap dries the skin of hands ? thank you.
For me CPAB reduces the aggressiveness of SLES, glycerin and ecosense soften the skin of hands. What is not respected in my formula ? -
Ecosense 919 or Coco-Glucoside is a vegetable-based. I have put 0.1 % of Katon CG as preservative.
-
You say that Ecosense “softens the skin” - it sounds like a refattener and I note that it is a glucoside. I hope you don’t get allergic reactions. I have posted before on this topic.
-
Hello Mr. Belassi and thank you for your responses.
I hope too. But my wife and daughter had the same effect on their hands :
drying with small cracks appear in the fingers levels. -
I just realised that I am not now following the original thread. Farouk, you need to start a new thread, please.

Hello Mr Belassi.
my question is : why my liquid soap dries hands. This soap is composed of :
SLES 9%
CAPB 4%
Coco glucoside 1%
Cocamide DEA 1%
Glycerin 2 %
Katon CG (preservative) 0.1 %
cirtic acid (ph~6)
Fragrance
waterIs there a problem in the proportions ? is this sulfates aggressive effect ?
thank you. -
You MUST start a new discussion in order to receive any answers to your questions.

Hello everybody.
What are the precautions to be taken in the preparation of a hypoallergenic liquid soap.
Thanks.

Mike is right. But now I have removed oil content as it was suggested by our mentors.
