I am formulating a gel and chose optiphen plus as the preservative. My final solution before adding carbomer is a 5.5. After I added the carbomer and nuetralizer the gel did not thicken at 0.2-0.5%.

From my understanding optiphen plus works best at a pH less than 6. Carbomer thickens in the 6-7 pH range. I have increased the pH and the gel was formed, however I am worried of optiphen’s performance now. If I add citric acid to lower the pH the gel will lose its thickness.

Try 0.75 to 1% Ultrez 30:you should get a gel at 5.5.You can also use with 0.3% xanthan gum to get even thicker gels as low as 5.0-5.5.

I was able to get it to thicken by using 1% carbomer at the 5.5 pH level. I was hesitant to use more than 0.5%
