  • VP/VA Copolymer Usage Rate

    Hi everyone,

I recently purchased VP/VA Copolymer (70/30, Liquid, 50% Active) and am attempting to formulate a strong-hold hair gel. However, as this is my first time making a hair gel, I’m unsure about the general usage rates for achieving light vs. strong holds.

So far, I’ve tested the copolymer at 2% and 3% active material, but the hold isn’t as strong as commercial products I’ve used. My starting formula is quite simple:

    • Water: q.s. 100%
    • VP/VA Copolymer: 2–3% (active)
    • Polyquaternium-37: 1%
    • Phenonip: 0.3%
    • Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate: 0.2%
    • Ethylhexylglycerin: 0.1%

Could anyone recommend a usage range for VP/VA Copolymer to achieve light hold vs. strong hold? Additionally, if you have any other suggestions for improving the formula, I’d greatly appreciate your insights!

Thank you in advance for your help!
