  • White Cast in W/O Emulsion Stick Foundation

I’ve made a W/O Stick Foundation that feels great, has good payoff, melts well, has a nice after-feel, and passes 45°C stability. However, I am noticing a white cast appearing on the top surface of the stick after about 3 weeks in RT, doesn’t happen in 45C stability oven. This white cast disappears after application, but it doesn’t look appealing beforehand.

Initially, I thought the issue was due to Propylene Glycol Dicaprate, which I was using at 10% since it gave me some trouble in other formulations. However, I tried using Cetiol C 5C, Cetiol RLF, and Lipex SheaSolve, and the problem still persists. The emulsion is done at 85°C, and I’m using a well-known emulsifier along with other stabilizers, so I’m not sure what the issue is.

My next step is to increase the Vitamin E Acetate from 0.20% to 1.00%. If that doesn’t work, I will switch the Rice Bran Wax for another wax, perhaps Candelilla or Sunflower.

I would appreciate any advice from fellow chemists. Thanks in advance.
