  • Gum / hydrocolloid expert?

    Does anyone know of any gum / hydrocolloid experts or labs that can look at an ingredient and suggest alternatives?

    I have a gum I may not be able to source anymore from our preferred source and I want to make sure we’re asking manufacturers for the right substitutes. Thus far, sharing docs on the gum haven’t worked.

    THANKS!

    Hi! The right choice will depend on the type of product and the ingredients you’re using.

      Thanks, @ketchito !

      Are you asking what type of product we’re making so that you can suggest the proper resources? If so, it’s in the beauty space and, given the format of the product and suppliers, I think a gum expert or lab in the beauty, food or pharma space may be helpful.

    I have to echo @ketchito here: as always that choice depends on the chemistry of the delivery vehicle and other formula constraints. I should add that if you share that TDS with a supplier while asking for viable gum substitutes, they may remain mute should they not recognize a solution. At our company we are transparent with customers if we cannot offer them a fit. Best to help them move on and not waste their time.

      @chemicalmatt Thank you.

      Are you articulating that a) you need additional info before being able to provide a suggestion, or b) are you saying that the gum that gets chosen is going to depend on the formula, or c) other?

      I did get leads from the forum where I was to start corresponding with the gum supplier about what we are doing, etc. and get leads about lab testing the current ingredient and get samples on some alternatives we could try in the formula. I’m thinking a few more conversations along these lines may yield the end answer.

      Thanks!
