  • My Shampoo Keeps Splitting

Hi everyone I really hope you can help I am really struggling with a shampoo I formulated, I can have 2 identical batches and one splits but the other does not. It seperates like it is curdaling. My original which is exactly the same passed preservative and did not split yet my subsequent batches have all split. I’m at a loss to understand why and have gone through and through them again and again tweaking this and tweaking that with no successes. I am stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I assume that your cetrimonium is cetrimonium chloride. You are adding a cationic ingredient to an anoinic system. It won’t be stable. What is that ‘ active ‘ in your formula ? And what was the pH ?

I recently measure the ph was 4 the active is Orange peel extract in aqua and glycerin. I remade the formula but I did not put in citric acid and the ph was 6.8

Ah so following that process would i be correct in my research that it would be the same for the coca beatine aka cocamidopropyl betaine also being cationic. The Sodium C14/C16 Olefin Sulfonate is anionic, the Ammonium Lauryl sulphate is Anionic. The Polyquartanaium is also cationic so i have 3 cationic vs 2 anionic being Olefin Sulfonate + Ammonium Lauryl sulphate? If I remove the cationic that may solve the problem? Thankyou so much for your help I really appreciate it!

is it a shampoo or a conditioner?

It is a lot of cationic Polymer in there for a Shampoo Normally you would use only a very small amount of cationic to give a nice touch to the hair in a shampoo. conditioner is a totally different field of product.

Polyquaternium-7 maybe 1 % even that seems a little much for me as for a normal shampoo

Cetremoinium Chloride max 0.2 % I would go even lower in a shampoo.

If you have too many of them they will lead to instability.
