  • Why Did Moisturizing Shampoo Separate

Posted by MDBeauty on June 29, 2023 at 4:24 pm

Hey guys, need your help please. Tried this once and it separated at the bottom of the bottle. about 10% of it was watery at bottom and smooth emulsified mix was 90% on top of that. Trying to make a moisturizing/conditioning shampoo. Thanks!

    1. Any idea why it separated?

    2. Do I need EDTA? (not relevant to separation issue. Just asking)

    3. Also any suggestions on improving or making the formula simpler.

    1. Because you loaded the formula with oil. Cleansing products are meant to remove oil. They should not be put into shampoos. You should have 0% coconut oil.

    2. Yes. Your preservative system needs a boost.

    3. Get rid of the oils. Get rid of the Glycerin. Reduce panthenol to 0.1%.

Keep your Coconut oil, BTMS and Cetyl alcohol for your conditioner.

Conditioning shampoos usually use polyquats or silicone derivatives to provide conditioning / moisturising.

1 year ago i tried the moisturizing shampoo with BTMS 50.i observed that there are no foam create because of i loaded oils in my formulation.in simple way if you want to make moisturizing shampoo then remove coconut oil, BTMS 50.use aquaporine, Aquaxyl for moiturising and for conditioning use Dimethiconol (and) TEA-Dodecylbenzenesulfonate. 3% aquaporine gives you 24 hrs moiturising.

I don’t think fancy moisturizing ingredients are needed in a shampoo because all of them will be rinsed off. You better go with polyquat or cationic guar which ‘stick to the hair’ and have that Conditioning effect - save some money by leaving out well-branded moisturizing actives. BTMs will destabilise the product - and you also have cationic guar so it’s useless in here. If you want some pearlizing effect add a hint of Glycol distearate. You may consider adding some anionic surfactant to make it more gentle to the hair and scalp and have some nice bubbles. Leave out the oils or keep 0.1-0.5 % for marketing.

Oh and also leave out vitamin E, even with high oil concentrations you probably won’t need that much - especially in a shampoo.
