  • One of My Shave Gel ingredients gives burning feeling. Help please!

Ive Learned a lot off of this website. Before i asked for any help i wanted to do as much research as possible for myself. Now i think is the time to ask for some help. Listed below are the ingredients of my product. I’ve been testing different formulations and batches on clients. I’ve noticed sometimes regardless of batch i make, sometimes a client will tell me the gel burns a little. We apply the gel after using trimmers to knock the hair down to a stubble. Can anyone point out which of my ingredients may be the cause. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks!!!!

    INGREDIENTS:
Water, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Aloe Vera 100x, Carbomer, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Triethanolamine, DMDM Hydantoin, Fragrance, Tocopherol Acetate

What is your final pH? I see you list TEA as I assume the neutralizer for the Carbomer but I don’t see an ingredient listed that would drop the pH back down to a more acceptable level.

After you fix pH, fragrance is usually my first suspect. Try a batch without it. if that doesn’t work, continue with a knock-out series.

As stated before … these are your 3 most likely culprits.  I am assuming you are using Carbomer 940?  You can switch to Carbopol 30 that gels at pH 4.0.  That would probably help.  But, yes, it is probably the fragrance … what are you using for fragrance?

I´d add PPG and Aloe Vera as well (yes, Aloe Vera!). Concentrated Aloe is very irritating on my skin.

good @pma. What % of this 100x powder is being used?

Since I have been making these gels for almost a very long time, I would guess fragrance, preservative or the aloe powder as @pma pointed out. The pH we maintain is around neutral and have had no problems so far re irritation. FYI we use Carbomer 940 in our formulations.
