BB cream, tinted moisturizier, foundation cream, CC cream, tinted sunscreen
For the past while I’ve been able to avoid getting into the trend of what is what with all these alphabetized creams and what not by asking customers to give me a sample product of what they like.
But recently our sales team has been asking me about them and I’m not too clear how to differentiate these myself. Anyone cares to explain to me how these are different or similar:1- Normal, old school foundation cream2- Tinted moisturizer3- Hydrating BB cream4- BB cream5-Tinted sunscreen6- CC cream -

These are all just marketing terms so it would be difficult to describe differences without some specific product examples. For instance CC cream might mean color control cream according to one marketer while it might mean color correcting cream to another. They’re both right.

I haven’t looked into this all that much, but as near as I can figure out, the differences have a lot to do with coverage, i.e. how much skin can be seen through the applied product. An old school liquid foundation was usually formulated to cover blemishes and even skin tones - as a result, it has the greatest coverage. Tinted moisturizer, Hydrating BB cream, and BB cream are all the same thing. Tinted sunscreen is tinted moisturizer with sunscreen added. I’m not sure what CC cream is.

Thanks Perry! So far I’ve always asked for a benchmark and tried to go off based on those but I’m recently seeing clients come in with say, a ‘tinted sunscreen’ request and they turn around and say it needs to have more coverage, hydration and coverage. Also, throw some cooling effect in there… why not!
@Bobzchemist. That’s exactly how I pictured it but the marketing claims are getting out of hand with the recent request I’m getting! CC (I’ve been told) is complete coverage, technically a foundation + primer with sunscreen, with a ton of conditioning agents, plant extracts, etc. -
Just remember that a tinted sunscreen, or a foundation + sunscreen, is still an OTC drug in the US
