  • VARISOFT EQ 65 and viscosity instructions.

I am working on a emulsified hand cream, using 165 and Varisoft EQ 65.  The instructions from the MFG (VariSoft EQ 65)….say this:

    The viscosity of conditioners including
VARISOFT® EQ 65 Pellets can be optimized by
applying a second homogenization step after cooling
    down to room temperature

    Note: it only says ‘conditioners’

The site then goes on to give two conditioner formulas, in which they recommend a 30 second homogenization at full cool down.  It also lists a formula for a lotion, and they do NOT include the 30 second homogenization at cool down.

So my question is…why does the post cool down homogenization thicken conditioners, but not recommended for the lotion?

I had to make 3 identical formulas to test 3 crosspolymers I am looking at.  The first two…I included a post cooldown blast with the emulsifier, and the third formula I skipped the step.  It did appear that the late blast of the emulsifier tool did thicken the formula???

I am old school…and like to know….how and why?

    Anybody?  @Pharma ?

BTW: Loving the feel of the VS EQ 65…. just have to keep in mind it is cationic.

An emulsion is neiter something homogeneous nor at an equilibrium but it’s a somewhat random semi-stable construct. Like a house of cards just that one forms it by tossing a few decks into a pot and stirring it. Weird things happen nobody can predict.

As a rule you should not add sheer stress to cationic emulsions. I am not one to question Evonik, they are wise chemists, but on this one they may be wrong on the EQ 75. Cool slowly with low sheer/slow mixing and you will come out OK.

Thanks for sharing, I’ll keep that in mind @chemicalmatt .

    ………add shear to a cationic emulsion……..

At any time….or after the initial sheer?
