  • To Add Preservative or Not?

Hey guys, hope everyone is well. I am working on a “clean” cleaning spray and would like to know which preservative would you recommend that would be stable in 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (1% active) and if I do need to add a preservative based on the formula. Manufacturer states Functionalized Alkyl Polyglucoside “can be used to reduce or eliminate the use of traditional preservatives. Its performance is not adversely affected by solution pH, amphoteric or nonionic surfactants, or typical preservative deactivators.” Is this, chelator and hydrogen peroxide enough? I prefer using preservatives but don’t want to if it would be a waste. Is it needed and which do you recommend? Shelf stability needed approx 12 - 18mths.

    Essential or Fragrance Oil 0.2

    Polysorbate 20 0.8

It’s not guesswork. You need to do a Preservatives Efficacy Test if you are intending to sell/distribute.

I will either way but just asking to know where to start with
preservatives. People on here are very knowledgeable and instead of
wasting material with preservatives that will not work or destabilize
the formula I ask for guidance.

Are you sure your H2O2 is stable? What %? Amine oxides have some activity.

Sales BS - “… Alkyl Polyglucoside “can be used to reduce or eliminate the use of traditional preservatives.”

If you have stable 3% hydrogen peroxide, no preservative is needed. What is meant by ” 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (1% active)”?

Unless pH ~7, I’d not bother with a preservative challenge test. The bugs are so whimpy most unpreserved cleaners will pass without a problem.

Phil, thank you for responding. The active meaning since I was intending to only use 3% peroxide as 33% of the formula it would get diluted down to be approx 1% which is the standard amount in most hospital grade cleaners. Manufacturers challenge test showed the following for the Alkyl. I noticed none of their base formulas used preservatives either.

“mm”? Any idea what those data mean? pH is a primary factor in hard surface product preservation.

You have 1%. Are you confident of stability?
