  • PFAS - Perfluoralkyl and Polyfluroalkyl Substances in fragrance oils?

Posted by Margaret on December 21, 2022 at 9:30 pm

I received an e-mail from a supplier with the following claims about a new line of fragrance oils:

Earth First is a collection of beautiful, CLEAN scents that are CONSCIOUSLY-CRAFTED for both safety & sustainability. These formulations combine the beauty of nature with safe science to create fragrances that smell amazing and are safer for people and the planet*.

Clean, Vegan, No animal testing and contain no PFAS**, sulfates, phthalates or parabens. Non GMO, Responsibly Sourced Certified Natural.

FEEL FREE TO COMMENT ON THE CLAIMS, SINCE I AM RATHER SKEPTICAL ABOUT ALMOST ALL CLAIMS.

Please note: this is an e-mail I received, I am not making these claims, dig? Dug.

Why would one add PFAS to a fragrance oil? Also, sulfates (in anhydrous products) and parabens aren’t common ingredients either… WTH! That’s why such claims are no longer allowed in the EU.

I too am clueless as to WHY PFAS would be in fragrance oils, but I have been wrong many times, thus my question to those who know WAY more than I do. They may as well add :”Now, without plutonium!”  to their list of claims.

It sounds like they have just looked at ‘No’ lists of other “Clean” products and copied them in without regard to whether these ingredients are actually used in fragrances.
With a few exceptions most fragrances would be vegan.
I think that phthalates are the only commonly used ingredient in fragrances and even then many companies are voluntarily moving away from phthalate solvents.

@ozgirl YES, I think you’ve hit the nail on the head regarding how this fragrance company is marketing their new line of FOs.
