Has anyone here successfully transitioned out of the cosmetics industry? I’m curious about exploring other industries but worry that I might not be successful. Most of my experience is in formulating color cosmetics and sun care. I’ve also created skin care and hair care/color prototypes, but I don’t have full development experience in those areas. Are there any skills from cosmetics that might be transferable to other industries?

I am not industry qualified in anything I do. I am not a cosmetic chemist, I am not a pharmacist and I am not a food technologist. I originally trained as an accountant, and then as a naturopath - but there are a ton of transferable skills you will have that will be useful in many industries and I have worked in all of these industries - from formulating pharmaceutical products, I have formulated infant formula, I have developed UHT beverages, and currently developing toothpaste and other cosmetic products.

The transferable skills you will have are probably a lot more than you think. You are likely to have an analytical brain - you will be able to formulate many foods using cosmetic knowledge - many foods (sauces, icecreams etc) use emulsification technology. The process is similar, the ingredients different. You could transition into QA; or perhaps ingredient sales. There is loads you could do.

I would truly like to try QC, I feel like I need a break from Formulations… I kind of want to switch to QC, I’ve seen people say it’s boring, but the idea of getting work assignments aligned and doing it daily and then going home and relax is cool to me.

You could certainly do QA/QC in any number of industries like food, beverage, paints & coatings, agriculture, etc. And just because some people think it’s boring, that doesn’t matter. What matters is whether you like it or not.

I worked with people at a factory where their whole job was to watch shampoo bottles go down a filling line and ensure that every bottle was properly labeled & filled. Many of these workers had this same job for over 40 years! I think they appreciated the consistency & lack of thinking the job required.
