Hello, I hope this is somewhat good enough to be related to cosmetics science, please let me know if there’s a better place for this.
What is a good 101 primer on laundry care formulations? The brand I’m working with wants to branch out to odor removers in laundry care, and I want to get a good refresher on ingredients and best practices as well.

Is this for US market? Laundry formulations can vary by geography. I don’t have much homecare experience but a couple resources I’d suggest:
HCPA Cleaning Fundamentals (a webinar series, it is ~$400 though ) - I attended in 2022 and it has a nice overview of surfactants, solvents, some regulatory concerns, and a few laundry formulations - though I don’t remember any specific odor remover formulations. HCPA has other resources you may find valuable too.

The other resources I know of are literature, but not sure how well they match with current practices. So you might also want to peruse recent patents from Unilever, P&G, KAO, etc.
-Formulating Detergents and Personal Care Products: A Guide to Product Development Hardcover – January 1, 2000 by Louis Tan Tai Ho (Author), Louis Ho Tan Tai (Author) - this one is a personal favorite though it is getting old.

You can also check all the series of “Handbook of detergents” (parts A to E), “Liquid Detergents” and the “SEPAWA proceedings”.

There are lots of laundry formulations (and other household formulations) on UL Prospector.
You can also get formulations from supplier websites (e.g. Stepan).
Zinador 22 from Croda is suggested as a possible additive for odor removal in laundry detergents.

One thing I did that was VERY popular was saponify discarded palm oil to make a laundry detergent. It ticked quite a few boxes in re-purposing something that was usually disposed of. I had a good global market for this laundry / dish wash/household general cleaner.
Once I got the method and formulation sorted, I outsourced the production to a local group of intellectually disabled. So ticked a few more boxes. And the market grew as a result.
