Is sodium silicate better than STPP in laundry detergent according to this chart
Posted by Abdullah on February 6, 2023 at 9:50 pmAccording to this chart, sodium silicate is better than STPP in everything they do in a detergent . Is this correct?
If it is correct, is it necessary to add stpp in liquid or powder laundry detergent if it already has sodium silicate?

Is that chart from a supplier? I’d search for a more independent sourse. STPP outperforms silicates in many of those attributes, and that’s why it was the most used water-softner ingredient, which also gave antirredeposition properties, soil suspension, anti-incrustation and alkalinity source to formulas. You can find that info in SEPAWA congresses and from CRC Publishing books on the matter.

As ketchito noted - the target of a builder is chelation not the functions offered in the chart you posted.
A Bacillus sp. has been the source of enzymes used in liquid detergents.

It’s worth nothing that phosphates have generally been banned in laundry detergents.

Here water is very hard. TDS is 700-1200. No matter how much chelating agent i use, i cant make all those hard water soft according to my calculations.
Currently i am working on liquid laundry detergent product to make it good enough to be competitive.
This is my current formula
SLS powder 6% active
CAPB 1.5% active
Stpp 6%
Sodium silicate liquid 2.4:1 6%
Water
What are your suggestions to improve this product
Wash water is very hard

Look at back issues of Happi https://www.happi.com/
Also consider Zeolite and do add a preservative.

pH is already 11-12. Do you think i need preservative? I prefer to increase the pH even more if it is necessary to be self preserving.
Here we have no problem in using stpp and sodium silicate and these two are available locally.
Zeolite i have to import from another country.
Does Zeolite have any advantage over stpp or sodium silicate?
