Home Cosmetic Science Talk Formulating Homemade preservatives

Hello, I live in Nepal which means ingredient choices are incredibly limited. I often need to import from neighbouring countries.

Previously I have used natural preservatives in my formulas (e.g eco plus, geogard) and I love these but I just cannot get them in country for a reasonable price. Therefore I am exploring if I can create my own preservative using potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate.

What additional ingredients might be required to create a broad spectrum preservative? Any other suggestions (especially quantities ) would be super helpful.

Ideally it will be accepted as natural by cosmos and eco cert.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Simone,

I am the co-founder of Indochine Natural established in 2006, with factories in Viet Nam and Malaysia.

My brand and factory production did not use any synthetic preservatives. I formulated products that did not require preservatives. These products ranged from foaming washes (shampoo, body, face) and face oils, etc.

The key was products made via saponification. These do not require preservatives.

I manufactured and exported globally, including the USA, Europe, and Japan. 90% of my turnover was from Private Label for brands globally.

Preservation is arguably the single most important thing when developing a product that can be contaminated, like the mayority of cosmetics. Then, it’s our responsability to deliver safe formulas. For that, I’d advise you to get more education on the topic, like this book: https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Cosmetic-Microbiology-Philip-Geis/dp/0849314534.
