  HLB of dimethicone 5 or 9

  When we search the internet about HLB, the HLB of dimethicone is 5 but in a file from lonza they said HLB of dimethicone is 9. Which one is correct?

  Dimethicone doesn’t have a HLB, it has a required HLB for w/si and a different one for si/w. In addition to that, dimethicone isn’t one defined chemical molecule but can differ in length and even branching and that greatly affects rHLB. Both values could hence be true or false .

  I have purchased a few kgs of 5 cst dimethicone to reduce tackiness of this o/w lotion. I want to add it in %1 or 2. Here are the ingredients 

  Olive oil    %6 
  Petrolatum   %4 

  Emulsifiers 
  Polyglyceryl 4 Laurate
  Glyceryl Caprylate
  Glyceryl oleate

  Water and glycerin and xanthan gum and caprylhydroxamic acid 

  The required HLB for olive oil and petrolatum is 7. If i add dimethicone 5cst %2, should I acount it as 5 or 9 for better stability?
