  • Has anybody bought ingredients from Alibaba or Ebay?

Posted by ngarayeva001 on October 8, 2018 at 11:12 am

    Hello All,

I am thinking about buying Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, but neither lotioncrafter nor makingcosmetics nor the UK suppliers have it. I found many options on alibaba and ebay, but I have never bought cosmetic ingredients from them (I have a perception it might not be safe). If someone purchased from these sources or has verified suppliers, please share your experience.

    Thank you in advance!

Sorry forgot to specify, I am a hobbyist. I need a small amount (50-150gr for example)

    (1)  Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is not easy to work with … there are much better options like Tetrahexadecyl Ascorbate.

    (2)  You’re not going to find Ethyl Ascorbic Acid from a repacker … it is only available in bulk from manufacturers.

    (3)  Alibaba/EBay - that’s like buying drugs on the street … you never really know what that white powder is in the bag.  I would stay away from Chinese suppliers who have no problem whatsoever adulterating their products.

Thank you very much @MarkBroussard “Alibaba/EBay - that’s like buying drugs on the street …” this is exactly what I was thinking, but I was not sure (I thought may be I am biased).

I have some experience with MAP. Not easy to work with at all. Will research Tetrahexadecyl Ascorbate. Thank you very much again!

You may be able to get samples to check out as they have big MOQ I got some sample essential oils but they were clearly substandard, sent from China CO2 extraction apparently !!

I try to keep it as safe as possible and only buy from the US and the UK suppliers. I had a bad experience even with Italian supplier (bought pretty affordable C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer that was virtually impossible to hydrate). I just can’t find ethyl ascorbic acid anywhere. Will follow Mark’s advice.

I have never had a bad experience buying from either EBay or direct from China.

I have bought from eBay without problems. Just make sure they have good ratings and specialize in cosmetics

Thank you @Belassi, I ordered my overhead stirrer from china and it works fine for small batches (all I need). I am just a bit concerned about buying active ingredients… But as it was mentioned, it’s impossible to find ethyl ascorbic acid from suppliers in the US (small amounts for crafters).

The thing is, I tend to use materials that are not available elsewhere, for instance, licorice. It is no good for me, the pathetic weak extracts sold in small quantities on hobby sites. So far at any rate, what I have bought arrives by mail promptly and performs as expected. (It’s not a quantity problem because the ingredients I buy are only used in small percentages, so a couple of kilos of whatever, is good for 100Kg of product…)

Just piggybacking: please be careful of Amazon as well. I know, it’s another potentially good avenue but I’ve received counterfeits of all kinds of things from Amazon lately. They’ve had this problem for many, many years but it seems to be getting much worse. I even got a package direct from China when they said they were in the US. Perhaps most people don’t notice or care. Won’t stop me from writing lengthy, scathing reviews though hahah!

I agree. I used to order ingredients from Amazon before (when I was looking for an ‘emulsifying wax’ instead of a particular INCI). No counterfeits but no high quality ingredient either.. Makingcosmetics started selling on Amazon.uk recently. More expensive but I have never had any issues with them.

I buy from this Polish site since many years, not best prices but a nice list of ingredients.
(Carbopol Ultrez 21 is very sensible to air moisture, try to pulverize it again)

    @maria
I live in Poland, so they’re local to me. They do have some of the best prices here. Also some nice rare ingredients. I also like beautyever.pl, e-naturalne.pl, zielonyklub.pl (cheap and has some otherwise rare ingredients, e.g. oat oil and collodial oatmeal) and mazidla.pl. Mazidla has really high quality extracts (I think), and they have Cromollient SCE (hard to get outside US).
