I am trying to formulate a face oil for sensitive skin using argan oil but argan being very heavy leaves a very tacky feel on the face.

To mask the effect of Argan Oil I have tried a few esters like:

    1. Octyldodecanol

    2. C13-15 Alkane

    3. C15-19 Alkane

    4. Isopropyl Myristate

I tried a combination of 10% Octyldodecanol and 10% IPM in the formulation but the face oil was still very heavy.

Are there any other esters that are non-comedogenic and will help in masking the effect of argan that I could use in formulating the face oil, and if so at what percentage and combinations can those be used ?

    hi

I would suggest looking into Cetiol Sensoft (Propylheptyl Caprylate) / Cetiol RLF (Caprylyl Caprylate/Caprate) / Cetiol Ultima (Undecane (and) Tridecane) for that kind of thing if you want a very light natural oil that counteracts the stickiness of argan you could use a safflower oil

i myself like the combination of RLF 2 parts and Sensoft 1 part a lot

you need to create a spreading cascade with a light touch and therefore you need a bigger amount of something to counteract the heavy argan.

Thankyou, I will definitely try these. I have tried a few more combinations using different types of emollients which seemed to be working fine in removing the greasiness of argan oil. Out of all combinations the one that worked best was :

      30% C13-15 Alkane

      10% Octyldodecanol

      10% Isopropyl Myristate

I am not sure if we can use combinations like these safely on face. If there is any data regarding safety issues, it’d be of great help.

Yeah, the majority of the face oil should be from light esters - Coco Caprylate, IPM, etc …

Aim to around 10-15% of you heavy plant oil (Argan Oil in this case).

Add some Coenzyme Q10 and/or Sea Buckthorn oil for marketing and you have a great product. 🙂

Some oils have some volatile silicone mixed in which allows to decrease oil content and improve spreadability of the product. Thinner film - less greasy
