Reg Dissolving GHPTC (guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride) in water

Hi Team,

I Started working on a shampoo formula without sulphates. I planned to use GHPTC for its anti static/anti drying property. As a first step, I decided to dissolve it in water and keep a check on stability. I used 0.4% of GHPTC and dissolved in water using stick blender. I reduced the PH as well to PH 4 as previously mentioned in this forum. After adjusting PH to 4 and stick blending for few minutes, I noticed that the solution turned clear. However after 1 week, I noticed that GHPTC started separating out. I didn't notice any specific layer of solution separating out, but I noticed that it started floating some on top and some on bottom. PFA images for the same.  I noticed that the temperature here in India reduced drastically from a couple of days. Not sure if that also has any impact on this separation. Can any one please let me know on what might be the issue and how to resolve this? Thanks a lot for your support in this regard.

    What other ingredients do you have with percentage and order of addition?

    @sri Did the separation occur in the final product, or in a slurry you left for a week (only water + GHTC). Usually, the slurry should be prepared the same day of your manufacture (keep in mind that this slurry is prone to contamination if you don't add a preservative).

    Thanks a lot for your response. I used only water and GHPTC (0.4%) and there are no other ingredients. I'm just trying to check how stable this solution is over a period of time before adding surfactants. I want to ensure to use only stable solution to eliminate the shampoo becoming unstable because of GHPTC. I'm not sure if this is right approach to test or better approach would be to first prepare final product and then figure out if there are any issues.

    I didn't create the final product yet. I didn't add any preservative. Other than the contamination issue, is there a possibility that slurry will separate if left unused versus using it the same day it is prepared?  Also will temperature will have any impact? Temperatures here dropped down to unusually low temperatures from 4-5 days. So just want to understand if that also can be a factor. If required, I will create slurry again and will add preservative to check if that is causing this separation.

    @sri If you don't add an acid to the slurry to help dissolve the GHPTC's coating and let it freely hydrate, then some particles might settle over time.

    But the only way to check its stability in your formula, is to make the formula, since the more critical part is its interaction with the rest of the ingredients.

    ketchito Thanks for your suggestion. Also I noticed some black particles inside today. So as you suggested previously mostly this might be because this is not preserved. So I decided to repeat this once by adding preservative and an acid to reduce PH to 4 and will update here. Thanks a lot for your help in this regard.
