Need a Cooling Agent

Hey Formulators ! Hope everyone is doing well !

I am working on Watermelon Gel in India. It is a crystal clear Gel with a dispensing pump. It sells really cheap, therefore all ingredients have to be affordable. I make it with Lubrizol's Carbopol 980.

Since watermelon is synonymous with cooling effect in Indian heat. I was trying to develop a gel with cooling effect. I have tried menthol crystals and menthol oil (Crystals do not dissolve in water obviously & oil causes turbidity). Crystals dissolve in Alcohol, however they lose their cooling sensation in Alcohol. And I simply cannot use Alcohol because it causes dryness, has a stingy smell and is technically not allowed.

My formula is

DM Water - Q.S
Propylene Glycol - 2
Carbopol 980 - 0.5
Watermelon Fruit Extract - 3
Hydroxyethyl Urea - 2
Preservative - 0.5
Color/Fragrance - Q.S

The gel has to look crystal clear, That is one of the selling points.
Hope to get some replies ! Thanks in Advacne !

Happy Formulating

  • I had to do some digging on a formula I was working on where they wanted the cooling effect of menthol without the smell.

Menthyl Lactate and a few other Menthyl compounds are available. Check out the Frescolat range from Symrise:

  • Thank you Herbnerd. I have studied Menthyl Lactate, However, It is almost Rs.8500 per Kilo which is very expensive. I need a cheaper compound.

    Have you thought about Camphor?

Also, I think you can still incorporate some menthol into your formula. Slightly heat the water with the crystals and gel after. This should stabilize this small input.

Not sure what you want to pay but check https://dir.indiamart.com/impcat/menthyl-lactate.html

You might find something in your price range.

I have found a cheap alternative to both ingredients suggested by you & I'd like to share it here. I made 20% Menthol solution with Polysorbate 20 (Tween 20). I dissolved 20gm of turpentless menthol crystals in 80gm Polysorbate 20.

I have had to increase the Watermelon fragrance to suppress the menthol's smell. But the gel feels cool after application and stays crystal clear.
