Hi all.

I have formulated a sulfate and silicone free shampoo which has this 'gel like' sedimentation / separation. I am listing down the raw materials, please help!

DM Water
Sodium phytate

Sodium cocoyl glycinate
Sodium cocoyl isethionate
Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate
Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine

Cocoglucoside+Glyceryl oleate
PQ 73
1,3 Propanediol
w/s Kokum butter
Sodium benzoate+Potassium sorbate
Citric acid to pH 5.5

Process: In water I disperse GHTC and then add Sodium phytate. Separately, I mix Lamesoft PO 65, SCI and Cocoglucoside to solubilise it well, and add this to main vessel. Then I add the other ingredients one by one.

My initial suspects were SCI and Lamesoft PO 65. I tried taking trials excluding each one separately, the problem persisted. Then I started removing the surfactants one by one, problem still persists. After that, I removed the GHTC, preservative and w/s kokum butter one by one, still there is gel like sedimentation.

I really don't understand where I went wrong. Please help!!

  • I also tried heating method.. still there is sedimentation.

Its happening within 24 hours at room temperature.
  • Hey Padmavathi,

    • what level(%) are you using PQ-73? Try removing it
    see if this fixes it

  • Hi @singhc10 I'm using PQ 73 at 3% (20% active). I have tried removing it, still there's sedimentation.

I do not have Ninol CAA. What does it do here? Is there an alternate?
  • Ninol CAA is secondary surfactant provides structure/thickens it. I have had an issue similar to what your are describing, it was fixed by mixing for longer duration(use Sweep Mix). Lamesoft PO65 requires mixing for long as its clump. If still cant fix it, direct message me
    • During what step of batching you start to see sedimentation? Attach a picture of your batch with sedimentation
  • Hi @singhc10 I have tried mixing it for upto an hour and half. I do not have a sweep mix. I use a propeller stirrer and every few minutes use a spatula to push material on the sides in.
Yes, Lamesoft does take a lot of time. Thats why I mix it with Cocoglucoside and then add it in.
I see the sedimentation the next day or after centrifuging for 10 mins at 2300 rpm.

  • I find on your picture that Coco Glucoside and/or lamesoft amount is too high, isnt it?
Can you try to remove it and check sedimentation again?
  • @MetalizeMerz I have tried to remove either and both together, still the problem persists. I kind of suspect GHTC. Trials are ongoing.
