Tea tree oil as a lotion preservative?

I've been researching vegan foundation recipes for awhile now and I've decided to go the scratch route again, so I need to make a natural lotion with some form of preservative to extend shelf life to roughly 3 months
I keep seeing people suggest that essential oils work as a preservative but, these are bloggers and not scientists, so I bring the question to you.
If anyone has a site with lotion formulas similar to what I'm trying to create feel free to let me know. I appreciate all the help!
