Home Cosmetic Science Talk Formulating Coconut oil making product unstable

  • Coconut oil making product unstable

    Posted by OrganicPap on January 10, 2019 at 3:06 pm

    hello, I would love your feedback about issues I am having with a product that is already on the market. It is a natural eye serum with the following ingredients: castor oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and vitamin E. The coconut oil is making the product “unstable” as it solidifies in colder temperatures. This is indicated on my product description page and on the bottle label. But I still get bad reviews from unhappy customers. I explain that this is normal since we don’t use preservatives and that serum should go back to liquid form if bottle is placed under hot running water. Can you please recommend natural ingredients that I can add to the formula to keep the coconut oil liquid? Or should I just completely replace it with a different oil? Thank you in advance

    Replace the oil. If you look at the grade of coconut you may see that it solidifies at Room Temperature. It isn’t really bringing anything to the table and is generally avoided in facial products.
    In is an error to retail a product like this and to have them run it under water especially since it is an easy solution.
    The lack of preservatives has no effect on the issues here.

    Thank you! I appreciate your response. I didn’t mean lack of preservatives. I agree that having them or not will not affect coconut oil. I was wondering if there is an ingredient that I can add to keep the oil liquid

    Why is the coconut oil so important? You could easily switch that out for something more suitable oil that doesn’t have the issue.

    @OrganicPap:

    There is available on the market Liquid Coconut Oil that will not solidify at room temperature.  You could also use Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides instead of coconut oil.  Either would solve your problem.

    Thank you. Unfortunately the liquid coconut oil is not organic. My product is certified organic and I want to keep it that way

    If you like coconut oil replace it with babassu oil. Both. Are similar about fatty acid but babassu oil is easy absorbed

    Molecular (volume) of babassu is far less than molecular of coconut. This makes  emulsion more stable. I assume that you  have high speed stirring
