Carbomer compatibility
Hi Everyone,
Several times trying to make a light texture cream with carbomer , carbopol 940. Please share your comments regarding the formula and process.
Water phase includes nicotinamide and extract based on 1,3 propanediol, also sodium gluconate 0.1 and potassium sorbate.
11%Oil phase from different oils; 2 emulgators which HLB sum 10.
. In the end when oil and water phases are homogenized, i also add mg ascorbyl phosphate diluted in water.The cream emulsion seems to be ok. That is the first more nourishing variant.
Then i made other batch to have a lighter texture, 50% base cream mixing with the same quantity of 1% carbomer water solution. One time emulsion remained stable in 40C for 1 month, another time broke out..could this occure because of propanediol or it is completely the wrong way to mix prepared solution of carbomer in the end?

@Silvia Carbomers and multivalent ions DO NOT play well together. You added not only Mg, but also Na (gluconate) and K (sorbate). All those electrolytes will collude to crash the cross-links in carbomer. Also, who uses actual Carbopol 940 anymore? Costs twice the competitive materials’ price.

I will try to make it a little bit different. Potassium sorbate can change with other preservative, Mg ascorbyl phospate should be in formula because of cream function:)..Maybe adding Carbomer to oil phase and homogenize with water phase will improve the stability, or another way to sprinkle it in pre-emulsion and homogenize?
What could you tell about nicotinamide impact on polymers such as carbomer, hyaluronic acid and hydroxy methyl ethyl cellulose gel structure?
