  • Can oils be considered plasticizers?

I’ve been searching for some literature in the cosmetic industry to confirm that you can conclude oils, such as jojoba oil or essentials oils, as a secondary function, could be considered to “plasticize” brittle waxes and possibly film formers used.

Could someone point me in the right direction if they know of any resource to find this reference, or am I completely wrong which is why I’m not finding the reference?!

Jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax, and essential oils are not really oils but a combination of things including terpenes, aldehydes, etc.

Both of the examples are liquid oils in their physical state. An oils physical state, liquid, is offering other solid ingredients more flexibility, no? For example, the liquid oils could improve the brittleness of a hard wax.

What you’re asking for is common knowledge in the industry - I have no idea where you’d find documentation of it, it’s just something most formulators know.

Thanks Bobzchemist. I’m in a role where I write a lot of technical support to claims. I’m always being challenged to support my information with references. My comments about the oils are something I know as a formulator from experience but was trying to explain to groups that don’t have the formulation background. For example, wax as a thickener is common knowledge, but here, you CAN find a ton of references to this all over the industry.

Try asking some of the wax suppliers technical service people - Ross, Koster Keunen, etc.
