    Hi friends!

I’m working on a cleansing oil formula and the supplier for Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate provides the following formula:

    Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate - 20.00 %

    Tricaprylin - 29.5 %

    Cetyl Ethylhexanoate - 10.00 %

    Isodecane - 25.00 %

    Squalane - 15.00 %

    Butylene Glycol - 0.5 %

Can anyone explain the function of butylene glycol in the formula?

At 0.5% I’m not sure it is doing much of anything. But it might help with keeping oils more compatible or tying up water so nothing can grow if you happen to splash some water into the container. Or it could be a residual ingredient from one of the other ingredients. Those would be my guesses.

Interesting… I know you can create microemulsions with these surfactants + polyols + water but its such a small amount at 0.5%. I tried it and it didn’t have much effect on texture or anything that I could tell so I wondered if it was for other reasons. Thank you!
