Best way to cover coco butter scent
Posted by ProfessorHerb on January 27, 2023 at 3:26 amDoes anyone have a suggestion for adding complimentary scents with essential oils to coco butter lotion? It has 10% coco butter but the scent is overpowering. I’ve tried adding vanilla and sandalwood but it still has a strong scent and I think it still smells awful.

Use refined Cocoa butter instead - assume you are using unrefined? (A lot of folks love the smell - ie Chocolate) or choose different butter in your lotion. Bit hard to know if that is your only issue if we dont know full formula ingredients. Cheers

Um…..Use Illipe butter. (Especially if you can get the stuff from ICSC Denmark.)

are u sure its refined? I use 5% in my formulas and the smell is barely there, maybe try adding musks, they make volatiles “Heavy” so they wouldnt smell so much…

Definitely get some deodorized cocoa butter. Should prevent a scent from being there in the first place.

Hi @MarkBroussard is Refined the same as Deodorized? The one I buy is called Refined from AWO in Australia and description is - Conveniently cast into in pellet form to allow for ease of measurement and melting, AWO’s Cocoa Butter Pellets have been gently refined to remove colour and odour, leaving pure, yellowish solid quality butter with a slight cocoa odour.

Not exactly. Deodorized is a finishing step beyond Refined.

@MarkBroussard thanks Mark good to know - I actually don’t have a problem with the scent and only use in small amount with other butters like Mango plus other oils etc. when I make an emulsified product. I haven’t seen one that is available for homemakers here in Australia but again I haven’t looked too hard as didn’t have a problem with scent etc. Cheers.
