  • Air Freshener ( Deodorant) formula

Posted by bahey on September 4, 2021 at 6:45 am

I had spent weeks developing air freshener spray based on :
    5% oil fragrances
    5% ethyl alcohol
    5% tween 20
    Deionized Water

the results didn’t satisfy me or our customers because it’s weak and doesn’t spread will like stock one .
i had changed the fragrance supplier many times !

could i need to raise the fragrance percentage?
but what  about the cost ?

    any ideas ? ????

hmm, 5 % is a lot of Perfume for an air Freshener. Normally I would say you use around 1 -3 % max.

To increase the Scent distribution within the air the Particle Size of the spray is very important if they are too big they will sink to the floor very fast without noticing a pleasant scent in the air. So maybe you can adapt the Spray head to a smaller Particle size. you although should think about an Aerosol Can with Propan Butan as Propellant. The Distribution to the air will be much better and therefore more efficient than with a non Aerosol Spray.

If you use a non Aerosol Spray you can although increase the amount of Alcohol so that the scent will be Vaporized together with the Alcohol. of course, you need to be careful about Flammability but I would say 15 to 20 % should be Possible without that being an issue and it will increase scent efficacy a lot.  (maybe you can than reduce Tween although a little and still get a clear solution)

    hope that helps

High fragrance & very little Ethanol you are using, the amount of Alcohol should be greater than 10%.
Use different type of fragrances from 0.4-1%
    Solubilize with tween 20,

I make spray air freshner using 2.5 parfume, with nearly 60 % alcohol(low odor ethanol) , and  20% propane&butane for propelant, no need to solubilized, since the fragrance have good solubility in high %alcohol

This formula from Fragrance supplier but the oil was separated on the surface of the batch so i had increased Tween20 to 6 %
but the smell was very low !

Think Biocriol WS1 is a bad idea for an aerosolized product.    The isothiazolinones can be sensitizers - that’s why they’re not used in leave-on cosmetics.
Sensitization in an aerosolized context could lead to anaphylaxis.

@bahey What @PhilGeis mentioned is very important, you need to be careful with the preservative chosen for an aerosol product, since it’s different for a preservative to be applied topically, than to be potentially inhaled.

Also, as @ariepfadli mentioned, you need way more alcohol. In your originally formula, you’re solubilizing fragrance in water, which means you won’t have much free fragrance to be released once the product is applied; instead, increase drastically the amount of alcohol and reduce (or eliminate) the solubilizer, so when alcohol evaporates, you’ll have free fragrance to be released.

Yes that formula for aerosol air spray, dont use alot water since your oil parfume will separate, so when you spray only water part with low parfume content came out
