SLES ALERT!!!

Does SLES cause itching when used in high amounts? This is what was told to me as the shower gel I bought from the supplier caused itching. I tried the same formula myself with the same amount of SLES. It did not itch. Is the problem here really SLES?

In looking at the CIR report on the safety of SLES they conclude...

"The panel noted that sodium laureth sulfate and ammonium laureth sulfate can produce eye and/or skin irritation in experimental animals and in some human test subjects; irritation may occur in some users of cosmetic formulations containing these ingredients. The irritant effects, however, are similar to those produced by other detergents, and the severity of the irritation appears to increase directly with concentration."

So, it's possible in high amounts that it might cause itching in some people. But it is not more problematic than any other detergent commonly used for body washes.
  • Look at the preservatives in it.

  • @Perry
thank you for the info about SLES but the formula made with the same amount of SLES was tried on the same people with allergies and did not cause any problems. I still can't understand the reason.
  • Hi @Belassi

Both the supplier and I used 0.6% DMDM H. It occurred to me that the shower gel sample that had been waiting for 2 weeks in a sealed box would be contaminated. but in ambient conditions, I did not give it much possibility with a protective ratio of 0.6.

@filiz - with any ingredient, any individual can have a problem which other individuals don't experience.  You may never know the exact reason why one individual reacts but for a general population, it's unlikely that SLES is a problem or will cause itching.

  • @perry ; thank you for answering..
  • also, take a look at the fragrance allergens
  • thank you @Dr_Sara ;I used the same perfume that I used in body splash products in shower gel.
  • patch test study found "An increase in the use of DMDM hydantoin in cosmetic products will also inevitably increase the risk of cosmetic dermatitis in consumers allergic to formaldehyde."
