  • I have a burning question.  I CONSTANTLY find myself looking for substitutions because, let's face it, who has an entire stock of supplies in their kitchenr!  I am so tired of, "I can't make this because i don't have that and I don't know what 'that' is so how can I replace it".  My question is, is there somewhere that formulators can go to find potential SUBSTITUTIONS?  I find that even if i can sort of figure out what the item i'm looking for a substitution for is, that still doesn't help me much for figuring out a substitution because there are so many variables; and those inci names with 2, 3 and 4 items put together - how does one figure out how to replace them?  It's very frustrating and extremely discouraging.
  • Hi perry ,
I have a good question for you.
Actually we are trying something new  "Powder Handwash"

    The ingredients which i am using are sls(50%) ,aos(20%) ,salt(20%) ,colour(5%),perfume(5%)..

and 9gm of which is good for making 200ml handwash.. you can google goodrej magic handwash for the same as i am trying to make similar to that.

But even after adding salt i am not getting desired thickness and also it is very very  harsh on hand after adding water ...

So can you Please provide me some good mustorizer alternatives to reduce this harshness in powder form and also some thing for thickness so that it can behave like that of goodrej one.
  • I am not a chemist and want to learn about the shampoo formulation.
Kindly guide me where I have to start.

@niecie2k - There is not an easy answer to this. Mostly, you have to learn why an ingredient is added and what it is supposed to be doing in the formula. Then you can look for alternatives.

For example, say you wanted to replace Sodium Lauryl Sulfate from a body wash.  You would first have to know what it is and what it does. It's an anionic surfactant that removes oil from surfaces and creates foam.  Then you have to look up alternatives. You would start with other anionic surfactants (SLES, ALES, etc) and then branch out from there.  But it all starts with knowing the chemical composition of what you want to replace and the function in the formula.

Thanks to everyone who sent in questions and to @chemicalmatt for his time & expertise.  I've posted the video on the sidebar of the forum but you can also see it here.

We're going to host another one in September, this time with a focus on formulating with "green" raw materials.
