  • A non-yellow version of Quercetin

Hi all, I’ve used quercetin dihydrate which is fairly bright yellow in colour and tends to stain face clothes (and potentially skin) when used in lotion. Is anyone aware of a version or method for producing quercetin which is colour neutral. I have come across a cream which has quercetin caprylate but not sure if its white. A white/non-staining end product would be ideal

If it’s white, it’s no longer quercetin. Depending on the position(-s) at which quercetin is esterified with caprylic acid, it will still be yellow, just better oil soluble and hence stain skin even better.
Why or for what purpose do you need quercetin anyway?

OK got it. Thanks. I’m looking at Quercetin for the anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory and other protective qualities

Anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory is not a cosmetic, it’s a drug and it’s not a substantiated claim or require unphysiologically high concentrations.
What polyphenols such as flavonoids do is some sort of ‘tanning’ (therefore, several flavonoids are considered tannins) which strengthens for example blood vessels. They are also good antioxidants. This effect is shared by similar compounds like flavanoles (e.g. epigallocatechin from green tea and pomegranate) or flavanones (e.g. hesperidin and naringenin from citrus fruit peels) which are usually colourless. Unfortunately, being colourless comes at a price; the aforementioned effects are comparatively weaker.
BTW flavonoids have been given a name derived from latin ‘flavus’ = yellow for a reason ;) .
