Inclusion rate of Triethyl Citrate as a co-fixative.

I am making a lotion with essential oils, and wanting to use Triethyl Citrate (TEC) as a co-fixative with Vanillin.  Was having trouble finding the use rates.... saw something like 1-5%?

Since it is a bit of a pricey ingredient, I want to stay on the low end of inclusion....but not so low that I do not get a benefit!

Any thoughts?

  • I made a sample last night with 1% TEC, and with an unscientific sniff test on my arm an hour after application.... I could still smell the EO's quite well, where as previous batches, I mainly smelled just Vanillin after an hour! :)

Use in proportion to your fragrance and/or essentials. I think 1.00% sounds about right - and your nose does not lie. Also, triethyl citrate should not be very pricey, unless you are sourcing from an online ingredient site. Jungbunzlauer has a good position and sells it worldwide.

Still a little confused.... I included 1% TEC based on all ingredients.  My Essential oils are 3% of all ingredients.  So you are agreeing with TEC at a rate of 1% of total?..... or 1% of the 3% EO's???  Please clarify.  Thank You.

Use 1.0% TEC in the total formula.
