Botanical extracts in Shampoo

What percentage would you suggest adding extracts such as raspberry leaf attract into shampoo formulation?

0.01% or less. That will have about the same effect as if you had used 5%.
  • Understandably the botanicals will be washed off but .01 % is not much.  What about 1%. Do you still think that is a bit much?

You have to ask yourself why you are adding the ingredients. Whether you put in 1% or 0.01%, it will have no noticeable difference on performance. These ingredients do nothing in a shampoo.

They are added just so you can put them on your label and tell consumers that they are in your formula. They are claims ingredients only. So, you can put in 1% or you can put in 0.01%. It will be more profitable to use 0.01% and will have exactly no impact on product performance.
  • At what percentage does an ingredient concentration become insignificant in a formulation? Can 0.00001% of Argan Oil be added to a formulation and then be listed in the LOI? Where is the limit?

In the US, there is no defined limit except to say that if you claim you add an ingredient, you have to be able to demonstrate that some of it is in there. You'll need some kind of analytical test that can detect the ingredient you say you added.
