Dear All,

I hope this note finds you well. I am new here and today is my first time to be here. Thanks a lot for this useful site. I am currently, desperate of starting my own beauty products line. I have a passion for it. I am women of colour, and I know what exactly we want here in Africa. I don't have billions of dollars but I would like to start with little that I have with me.

I would like to know where should I start:
It is buying small cosmetic equipment and formulating everything by myself? or Give to the beauty laboratories companies to do it for me?

How much I need as capital to start with?

I am kindly waiting for your help, assistance and advise.

Thanks and Regards,

Betty Mupenda

@Perry has a course for this...

My suggestion is to come up with 1 single product idea that solves a problem your customers have that no other product can solve. Once you have decided on that product idea, come back and talk to us.

@Bmupenda - My first suggestion is that you get a copy of our free report.

The first place to start is to come up with your point of differentiation.  Answer to yourself, why would someone buy your product instead of something that is already on the market?

And if you believe that there is nothing else on the market like it, you haven't done enough research.  If there really isn't anything else like your idea on the market that only suggests that the idea is not a viable one.
  • @Bobzchemist, thank you for your suggestion. My product idea is to make a product for Natural hair that will make the hair to grow long, softness and shinning. From Shampoo, conditioner, treatment and Oil. And I would like to use natural ingredients like Avocado oil, Olive oil and Coconut oil.

@Perry, Thanks for the report is very useful and very informative. I think I am going to use all the steps accordingly.

I really appreciate both of your comments and suggestion.

Thank you and looking forward for more advise.

    Best Regards,

  • @Bobzchemist and @Perry, still waiting for your advise. I am really depend on your expertise and Knowledge in the industry. If you think I can start with a consultant to do the formula and give to the big company to do the rest of the things. Fine with me. Or you want me to learn everything on my own is also fine.

Thank you and looking forward to your kind advise.

    Hi Betty
Looks like Bob and Perry have already given their advice.
You use the word "desperate" to start your own beauty line.  If timewise it's urgent then I'd advise hiring a formulator.  But otherwise you could try and learn yourself but this would likely take a few years of study and experimenting.

    Seriously, focus on ONE product.

Maybe a treatment oil would be best - it always simplifies things when you make something without water.

As @MakingSkincare says, how you proceed comes down to how much time you have, and how much money you have. Doing this fast requires paying a bunch of money to consultants and private label manufacturers. Doing this cheaply requires taking your time, learning about the materials available yourself, researching the similar products that are already being sold, and then figuring out how you can make something different that customers will want to buy.

It is much less risky, in my opinion, when starting a new company, to have one very good product to sell, rather than a range of me-too, not exceptional products. It is easier to sell, it is easier to be passionate about, and once sales have begun to develop, you have a foundation of customers to begin to sell other products to.

    Hello Experts,

@bobzchemist and @MakingSkincare, Thank you so much for your advise.

I decided to buy small equipment so that I can learn myself slowly. Could you please recommend some nice and cheap equipment for shampoo/Conditioner/Oil treatment?

    Once again thank you.

Betty, first buy a stick blender - try to find one that has a long stick and a powerful motor. That will do high-shear mixing for you and create emulsions. A hair conditioner is basically an emulsion and you will be able to create 4 or 5 Kg using a stick blender.
Buy a 3L plastic jug to go with it and get yourself a plastic bucket capable of holding say 6Kg or so.
You will also need some mixing vessels, ideally chemistry beakers, sizes 2L, 1L, 500mL, 300mL, and 100mL.
A set of scales can be had very cheaply on EBay, buy a set that can measure up to 1Kg at 0.1g increments and a larger scale for weighing water etc capable of weighing 10Kg at 1g or 2g increments.
And a lot of plastic spoons. (If you mix things in beakers with metal implements, soon you won't have any beakers.)
Cosmetic Brand Creation. Concept to name to IMPI search to logo and brand registration. In-house graphic design inc. Pantone specs. Cosmetic label and box design & graphics.
