What is vitamin E doing in vaping formulation?

PerryPerry Administrator, Professional Chemist
Someone mentioned this story in another thread about Vitamin E.

Here are the details
https://beta.washingtonpost.com/health/2019/09/05/contaminant-found-vaping-products-linked-deadly-lung-illnesses-state-federal-labs-show/

Basically, Vitamin E acetate was found to be a common compound that linked all the cases of lung disease.

The question is, why would someone include Vitamin E acetate in the formula in the first place?

I've never formulated a vaping solution & can't think of any obvious reason to include that compound but someone seems to have thought it was a good idea.

    @Perry:

    They're using Vitamin E Acetate as a thickener for the vaping fluid because it (Tocopherol Acetate) is very viscous.

    In most vaping products, the THC/Cannabidiol Oil is diluted in either Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides or Propylene Glycol, but the fluid lacks sufficient viscosity to prevent it from leaking from the vape cartridge.  So, to thicken it up to prevent leaking, some companies are using Vitamin E Acetate as the thickener.

    A more sophisticated approach is to use Phytol (a terpene) as the thickener.

    There is no reason for tocopheryl acetate to be included. It should contain Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, Nicotine and possibly flavourings (and flavouring carriers).

    Some news articles have quotes suggesting the use of VE Acetate being added as a thickener and colourant to "cut" the THC concentration, but making it seem legit.

    @MarkBroussard They probably do extraction in the triglycerides too. But why would they add any triglycerides anyway I mean that in itself is likely to cause lipid pneumonia.

    I don't know ... I worked on one vaping fluid project.  I, for one, would never smoke anything in a Propylene Glycol base.  They're using CCT because it vaporizes at the proper temperature, although it is also common for the THC/Cannabidiol to be cut in CCT ... it all depends on where you are getting your cannabis oils and whether it is cut in CCT or not.

    Perhaps I am getting old, but what's the problem with simply rolling a joint, smoking a pipe or mixing it in with some Shisha tobacco in a Hookah.

  • Not going to formulate vaping fluid but just curious why wouldn’t you smoke anything with propylene glycol? I thought it’s safe...

    What's the point when there a other options to smoke that don't include vaporizing solvents into your lungs?

    Well for here in FL, medicinal cannabis was restricted to vapes only, and flower wasn't allowed. Although, it has been allowed more recently.
