Can someone confirm for me why so many formulas heat the water and oil phases to 170F or 176F? Just want to make sure I know why I’m doing what I’m doing. To encourage homogenous mixture? To sterilize? Both? Or I’ve missed the point?

To melt waxes, fatty alcohols, emulsifiers and other solid ingredients. Water should be the same temperature because if you add cold water to hot waxes they will solidify faster than you homogenize it.

And to make it easier to form smaller emulsion particles.
