Stearic Acid and Triethanolamine emulsion system
Hi All,
I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with using stearic acid and triethanolamine as an emulsion system. I’ve seen big brands like Lush use it in most of their creams.
The first cream i made as a 6:1 ratio with stearic acid being the larger as well as 1% Cetearyl Alcohol. It was quite gel like until i added citric acid to reduce the pH.
However, in ingredient lists of lush such as this one, they don’t use any acid to adjust pH
Oat Milk Rose Water Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil Fair Trade Organic Cocoa Butter Glycerine Stearic Acid Triethanolamine Tincture of Benzoin Rose Absolute Chamomile Blue Oil Tea Tree Oil Lavender Oil Cetearyl Alcohol *Benzyl Benzoate *Citronellol *Geraniol *Limonene *Linalool Perfume Methylparaben Propylparaben
So i guess my question is do you think they would just be titrating the triethanolamine to get the required consistency of the cream rather than using an acid to adjust the pH which is affecting the viscosity? And would you consider this emulsion system to be any good?:
