Social Marketing

Having had to re-brand our company has been a traumatic experience but it has had the benefit of forcing me in particular to take a major role in the marketing as well as product design. In this respect, I found until now, that Facebook was more effective than Google but still, not that effective.
Until now.
I accidentally created, by using a combination of images, a post that's going viral. I targeted just three cities with a total spend of just $5 over 7 days. Total cost $5. It's been running 3 days and so far has a reach of 4,500 views, 400 reactions (likes, shares, etc) and shows no sign of slowing down.
Of course I have been analysing why this happened with a view to creating more viral posts. I think I know why. And how.

Great story. So much of success in cosmetics these days is due to your ability to be a good social media marketer. Have you tried Instagram? I've seen reports that beauty brands are doing great on Instagram and Pinterest
  • Great idea! Thanks! No not yet. I have so much work to do with the Web site and Facebook and the lab work that it's hard to find time. But I will.
I've just got the idea for the next post. I am going to modify an actual advert from the 1920s. The idea is to make people laugh and want to share it, at the same time as (subtly) promoting your product. If there's something slightly 'taboo' as well, that's a big plus.

  • I just finished and posted it. I took a rather unsubtle 1920s advert, found a modern couple in a sexy pose, and sandwiched the product with them. This all took me maybe an hour searching and working with Photoshop. I haven't boosted it because I want to see what kind of momentum it can develop on its own. I figure by studying what works/doesn't I can learn how to make more effective viral posts. The link is here if anyone wants to see it. I'm going to make some more, I already found some cute themes.

  • After some analysis I finally realised what I did. I tapped in to the baldness trope for men. (97% of the response)
Having said that, it goes to show the effectiveness of social marketing, if you manage to create something that works. It appears that we're going to reach a 10,000 audience for a total spend of $10 (USD). This was tried on 3 specific cities. I'll now hold it in reserve for later, when I'll target the whole country and use a budget 20x greater, hopefully achieving a reach of 200,000
